Italian side, SSC Napoli are considering a January move for Chelsea midfielder Billy Gilmour, as they look to strengthen their midfield following unimpressive performances from Chelsea loanee, Tiémoué Bakayoko with the 19-year-old considered a plausible addition to Gennaro Gattuso’s team.
Gilmour has been on a long term battle for fitness and is set to make his first appearance of the season after a nasty knee injury kept him out since early July, but a move away from Stamford Bridge this winter could materialize with Chelsea boss Frank Lampard open to giving the youngster more development time with a loan move to Naples.
With the Chelsea middle already looking beefed up with the presence of N’Golo Kante, Matteo Kovacic, Jorginho, Kai Havertz and the rest, Gilmour would surely be surplus to requirements this season, but with a number of impressive outings to his credit when called upon last season, the Scottish international has apparently scored high rankings in the eyes of Gennaro Gattuso as the Italian gaffer eyes to reinforce his side with a potential winter loan move for the 19-year-old.
The Gli Azzurri have been monitoring Gilmour’s progress since last season with hopes of securing a loan move and would like to see him fit permanently into the squad.
This is of course in contrast to Lampard plans, with the Blues boss aiming a buy-back clause for his starlet in case he impresses at Diego Armando Maradona Stadium.
Gilmour is set for return when Chelsea host Leeds United at Stamford Bridge tomorrow after nearly five months sidelined.
