Nigeria Head Coach Rohr Explains Why He Will Start Akpeyi Against Benin
Super Eagles head coach admitted their issues in the goalkeeping department but has made opinion that the South Africa-based star who keeps for Kazier Chiefs might be in Sugar Eagles goal on Wednesday. The Kazier Chiefs goalee, Akpeyi has the best chance of replacing Super Eagles first choice Uzoho, who is currently out of action due to knee injury in the Nigeria’s 2021 AFCON qualifying match against the Squirrels, Gernot Rohr has disclosed.
Rohr summoned three goalkeepers – Akpeyi (Kastina United’s), Ikechukwu Ezenwa and Fortuna Düsseldorf’s man Maduka Okoye for the Super Eagles’ game against the Squirrels on Wednesday at Godswill Akpabio Stadium, Uyo and Lesotho on Sunday.
In the press conference in Uyo, Rohr disclosed the stadium in the goalkeeping department and assessed the chances of each goalkeeper ahead of the upcoming match against Benin at Godswill Akpabio Stadium on Wednesday.
“We are not lucky enough in this goalkeeper position. If you recall with what already happened before with Carl Ikeme and then we had the problem that Uzoho did not play in his club last season”, said Rohr.
“And now he is back, and the same time injured, so we are not lucky. But we are seriously working on this position with goalkeeper’s coach Alloy and his colleagues.
“For Maduka, it wasn’t really that easy for him to perform well in the match against Brazil, the best players in the world. But he does not understand like you said, African Football.
His last time in Nigeria was when he was just six years old, coming now for the second time to the county, So you can imagine that.
“After only involved in one training session, to pick him as the first choice would not be a great chance for him, perhaps. So we have to be careful, we won’t want to burn him.
“He is a player for the future, be we have a chance to meet again perhaps In-form Daniel Akpeyi who is currently doing great job for club. The first choice goalkeeper for South Africa based team Kaizer Chiefs so he has experience in a young team.
“We will see. We also have Ikechukwu Ezenwa but he didn’t have much play-time in the league, So I think you can find yourself a solution for tomorrow”.
